Utrecht 900 years
It's Utrecht's birthday! Today it is 900 years ago that Utrecht received city rights and that is being celebrated in a big way. Various events have been held in the city for months and the kick-off is today with a performance by the Utrecht band Kensington and city carillonneur Malgosia Fiebig from the Dom Tower.
Cake for birthday Utrechters
4 p.m. to 5 p.m.: Utrecht treats. More than a thousand inhabitants of the city, whose birthday is on June 2, just like Utrecht, have received an invitation to come and eat a cake in the city center. At the head of the Zadelstraat near the Mariaplaats, a number of year-olds cut cakes together with Utrecht administrators and hand them out. All this under the watchful eye of Nijn-hundred. In a suitable dress, this five-metre Miffy supervises the activities of Utrecht 900 until 11 November. Duimalot and BENR give a short performance and there are town criers.
Music and dance
4.30 pm to 8.45 pm: On Mariaplaats, Neude, Janskerkhof, Stadhuisplein, Wed and Stadhuisbrug, Utrecht music and dance companies perform as 'support act' for city carillonneur Malgosia Fiebig and Kensington on the Dom Tower.
Kensington and Malgosia Fiebig from the Dom
8.45 pm to 10 pm: Utrecht 900 concert from the Dom Tower. The Utrecht Glockenspiel Association has taken the initiative for the highlight of the 900th anniversary of Utrecht. The concert starts with the ringing of the bells of the Dom Tower by the Utrecht Bell Ringers Guild. After a welcome by Mayor Dijksma, city carillonneur Malgosia Fiebig plays some songs from Kensington. Then the band takes over. Kensington plays at 100 meters. This special Utrecht 900 concert can be seen and heard on large screens at Domplein, Stadhuisplein, Neude and Janskerkhof.
A new highlight in an already special year, says Kensington guitarist Casper Starreveld. "In our own city, playing on top of the iconic Dom, while it can be heard and seen all over the city. It will be an unforgettable show, with the best view ever. We are proud to be a very small part of the 900-year-old melody of our beautiful city.”
Top restaurants treat
In addition to the above activities, all Utrecht museums can be visited for free today. And under the slogan De Domstad Deelt Uit, nine Utrecht top restaurants treat themselves to 900 amuse-bouches. After today, there will be a party in the city throughout the Whitsun weekend. The full program for June 2 to November 11 can be found at utrecht900.nl.
